How to Properly Deliver and Install a Refrigerator
Share
Installing a refrigerator may seem simple, but there are important steps to follow to ensure it runs correctly and lasts for years. At PRS Appliances, we help customers across Hawaii choose the right appliances and provide guidance on proper setup. Here’s what you need to know about delivering and installing a refrigerator the right way. Doing this without professional help may
1. Preparing for Delivery
Before moving your new refrigerator into place, take time to prepare:
-
Measure the space – Ensure the fridge will fit through hallways, doorways, and into its final spot.
-
Clear the path – Remove obstacles like rugs, furniture, or cords that could get in the way.
-
Check electrical requirements – Most refrigerators need a standard 110/120V outlet, but larger built-ins may require special wiring.
2. Transporting the Refrigerator Safely
Improper handling during transport can cause serious damage.
-
Never lay the refrigerator flat – Doing so can cause compressor oil to flow into the cooling lines, which may ruin the appliance. Always keep it upright.
-
Secure it properly – Use moving straps or a dolly to avoid tipping.
-
Be careful with the doors – Tape them shut before moving to prevent them from swinging open.
3. Positioning the Refrigerator
Once you get the fridge inside, make sure it’s positioned correctly.
-
Leave clearance space – Keep at least 1–2 inches of space on the sides, top, and back for airflow. This helps the unit run efficiently.
-
Level the appliance – Use the adjustable legs to ensure the fridge is perfectly level, preventing uneven cooling and door sealing issues.
4. Connecting the Refrigerator
-
Plug into the proper outlet – Never use an extension cord. Plug directly into a grounded wall outlet.
-
Hook up the water line (if applicable) – For ice makers and water dispensers, carefully connect the water line and check for leaks.
-
Wait before plugging in (if moved) – If the fridge was tilted during transport, allow it to stand upright for at least 2–4 hours before plugging it in. This lets the compressor oil settle back into place.
5. Final Steps
-
Allow time to cool – After plugging in, let the fridge run for 4–6 hours before loading food.
-
Check temperatures – The refrigerator should be set to around 37–40°F and the freezer to 0°F.
-
Adjust shelving and doors – Make sure everything is aligned and working smoothly.
Tips from PRS Appliances
-
Don’t overload the fridge immediately; give it time to stabilize.
-
Clean the coils annually to keep it running efficiently.
-
If you’re not comfortable installing it yourself, consider professional delivery and installation for peace of mind.
